Weaving is both fun and relaxing – but when you’re just starting out, it can feel a little overwhelming. What do you actually need to begin? Here’s a simple list of five things to help you get started, perfect for beginners who want to explore the art of weaving on a small scale.
Something to weave on – a loom or frame loom
It might sound obvious, but the type of loom you use depends on your project. A floor loom works best for large pieces like rugs or tablecloths. If you’re looking for something simple and portable, a frame loom is ideal – easy to use, compact, and even suitable for children.
A weaving needle – for smoother weaving
While it’s possible to weave using just your hands, a weaving needle makes the process much easier. It helps you guide the yarn through the warp more precisely and comfortably. Our looms come with a handy weaving needle, so you’re already one step closer to creating your first piece!
Cotton warp – the foundation of your weave
The warp is the set of vertical threads that hold your weaving together. A good warp yarn should be strong and durable. Cotton is a popular choice, but linen also works beautifully. Our starter kit includes a sturdy cotton warp to get you going right away.
Yarn or other materials – let creativity lead the way
This is where you can really experiment! Use classic yarn, fabric strips from old sheets, or even second-hand finds. You can also upcycle materials like plastic bags for something truly unique. Want to skip the search? Our weaving kits come with carefully selected materials that are perfect for both beginners and creative makers.
Dowels – to display your work
When your wall hanging is finished, of course you’ll want to show it off. A simple wooden dowel works perfectly – or try a beautiful branch from nature for a rustic look. A stick about 10 cm in diameter is usually a good fit. Yes, it is included in our starter kit :)
With these five essentials, you’re ready to start weaving! We hope this guide helps you take your first steps into the world of weaving – and discover just how fun and rewarding it can be.
