How to Warp a Frame Loom - Step by Step Tutorial

Updated: Oct 15

Warping your frame loom is the very first step before you can start weaving. It simply means threading the warp – the vertical threads – up and down through the pegs of your loom. The warp acts as the “skeleton” of your weaving, holding the weft (the horizontal threads) in place.

In the video below I’ll show you exactly how to do it, but here’s a quick step-by-step guide in text form.

What you'll need:

  • Frame loom

  • Thread

  • Scissors

Step by step:

1. Attach the thread

Start by tying the thread to one of the loom’s pegs. A simple loop knot works just fine.

2. Warp the loom

Pull the thread up and down across the pegs until you reach the width you want for your weaving. The warp should have an even tension – not too tight, but not loose either. Remember that the threads will tighten a little more once you begin weaving.

3. Finish off

When you’re done, tie the thread with the same type of knot at the end and cut it off.

Tip!

If you’re working with thin yarn, or if you want a sturdier warp, you can double it. Simply go back the same way again so that two threads sit in each groove, and secure the end where you started.

In the video I’ll guide you through the whole process step by step. But don’t forget – if you find your own method that works well for you, that’s perfect too!

In this video I show you how to warp a frame loom.

When you are finished:

Once your weaving is complete, gently lift the warp threads off the pegs one by one. Then you can mount your weaving on a dowel – and voilà, you have a finished wall hanging ready to display!
