How to Secure Yarn Ends When Weaving

Updated: Jan 7

Securing yarn ends is the last step that is oftentimes procrastinated. But its easier and goes fast than you think. In my video, I show how I do it, and here I explain the same method so you can read and watch and try it at your own pace.

You need:

  1. Scissors

  2. Crochet hook

  3. Darning needle

Why do we secure yarn ends?

When yarn ends are secured:

  • your weaving holds up better over time

  • the back looks just as neat as the front (major satisfaction)

  • you avoid loose ends poking through

This is especially important for projects like bookmarks and key chains, which are frequently used and both sides are visible.

How to secure yarn ends

  1. Leave at least 10 cm of yarn on the back of the weaving

  2. Thread one yarn strand onto a needle

  3. Slide the needle behind 2-3 rows of yarn, and pull through

  4. Don't pull too tight, it can cause the weaving to draw in and look uneven

  5. Check the front to make sure nothing shows

  6. Trim the loose end about 0.5 cm from the weaving

  7. Repeat with the next yarn end

How to secure wool roving

  1. Leave about 5 cm of roving on the back of the weaving

  2. With a crochet hook (a larger size works best), pull the roving behind 1-2 warp threads

  3. Check the front to make sure nothing shows

  4. Adjust the warp threads if needed, making sure the tension is even

  5. Trim the loose end about 0.5 cm from the weaving

  6. Reapeat with the next wool roving end

In this video, I show how I do it.
